San Jose, Calif. Avago Technologies has released its first series of small
6-channel optical incremental C-shaped encoder modules for brushless DC (BLDC) motors used in industrial automation applications. The AEDB-9340 series modules, which include a codewheel with an optical radius of 15 mm (0.590 in.), are designed to reduce overall motor size and fit easily into round encoder housings.
The integrated encoder is said to be easy to assemble and offers better switching accuracy (±1° mechanical commutation) than conventional Hall sensors. The optical encoders feature a three-channel integrated commutation output (U, V, W) to emulate Hall sensor feedback, and a two channel quadrature rotary output with ungated index pulse (A, B, I) for position feedback.
The series also provides configurable pole-pair with matching 2, 3, and 4 pole pair codewheel options. Operating from a 5-volt supply, the encoders are rated for up to 2,500 counts per revolution (CPR) and up to 150 kHz frequency response. The operating temperature range is -10°C to 85°C. The devices are RoHS compliant. Click the link for the AEDB-9340 datasheet.
Typical industrial automation applications for the AEDB-9340 include food and beverage processing equipment, packaging and textile machinery, and machine tools. Other applications include robotic devices, industrial printers, plotters, metal processing, and
woodworking equipment.
The demand for improved motor control by housed encoder and motor manufacturers
is driving the trend towards wide scale use of optical encoders with integrated
commutation output over Hall devices in BLDC motor applications, according to the company. The key reasons: optical encoders are said to be less expensive, easier to align and just as reliable as Hall sensors.
In addition to allowing designers develop motors that are smaller, the AEDB-9340 encoder modules also are said to provide superior switching accuracy due to much
lower hysteresis when compared to Hall sensors, which require larger housings and are more difficult to align. With the use of transmissive technology, the encoder also provides better and more accurate feedback as the BLDC motor torque ripple is reduced, said the company. Avago's AEDB-9340 series optical encoder modules are priced at $29 each in quantities of 1,000. An evaluation kit, which includes an alignment tool and connector cable, is available for $325.
Avago also offers an AEDA-3200 ultra-miniature optical encoder module for industrial and motor control, and the AEDA-3300 series encoders for applications such as servo and stepper motors, automation equipment, and wafer-handling machines.
