LONDON — CAN in Automation (CiA) has submitted the CANopen device profile for electric drives and motion control for international standardization to the IEC.

The device profile, which has been implemented in drives under the name CiA 402 many thousand times already, will be published as part of the IEC standards (61800-7).

CiA, the non-profit international users' and manufacturers' group for Controller Area Network (CAN), enhanced the specification with type-specific PDO mapping (process data object) and additional operating modes before submitting it to the IEC.

The type-specific PDO mapping will simplify the configuration of a drive via the CANopen network and was attached to the CiA 402 specification. The additional operating modes consist of cyclic synchronous modes for position, velocity and torque.
