PWM control IC touts input voltage range up to 75-V

El Segundo, Calif.—International Rectifier introduced the IR3651, a synchronous PWM control IC designed for high-performance synchronous DC/DC buck applications with an input voltage range up to 75-V.

With programmable switching frequency up to 400-kHz, the IR3651 is suitable for a wide range of applications, including telecom and base-station power supplies, networking servers, automotive and industrial control.

"The IR3651, with a pair of IR's DirectFET MOSFETs, can achieve greater than 88% system efficiency at 48Vin and 3.3-Vout at 6-A without a heat-sink or airflow," said Rami Hamze, senior marketing manager for IR's DC-DC Computing Products, in a statement. "Another advantage compared to similar devices on the market is IR3651's higher maximum input voltage rating, enabling a more robust and reliable design."

The IR3651 is designed to drive a pair of external N-channel MOSFETs up to 25-A. Protection features such as programmable soft-start, hiccup current limit and under-voltage lockout are provided for required system-level reliability in the event of a fault condition. The device also offers synchronization, which allows simplified system-level EMI filter design.

The controller includes a 150-V half-bridge driver that allows for considerable design flexibility. For instance, the device may be used in low power (less than 60W) non-isolated DC/DC converters for network equipment as well as high power (greater than 200-W) pre-regulator stages in regulated isolated converters. As a result, the IR3651 can be applied to designs for 36-V inkjet printers, 28-V aerospace applications, 24-V electric bicycles, 72-V battery systems, 18-V wall bricks, 12-V secondary-side post regulators and general purpose high-voltage, non-isolated DC/DC converters.
