San Jose, Calif. Renesas Technology has added eight devices to its H8SX family of 32-bit CISC microcontrollers. The devices areplaced in three groups: the H8SX/1638, H8SX/1648, and H8SX/1622. All eight devices in these groups operate at speeds up to 50 MHz and achieve performance levels up to 50 MIPS.
Members of the H8SX/1638 series have two successive-approximation type 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) units, each with 4 channels, while members of the H8SX/1648 series have three such units. Each of these ADC units operates independently. Conversion time has been reduced to 2 μs, making them a good fit for motion control, image processing and other embedded applications that obtain parameter data from analog sensors.
The microcontrollers in the H8SX/1622 group have one 10-bit successive-approximation ADC with 8 channels. However, they also incorporate a 6-channel 16-bit delta-sigma ADC with a conversion speed of 90.5 μs at 25 MHz operation. Target applications for these products include medical monitors, handheld consumer electronics products, power tools, robotics, and automobiles.
Other functions built into H8SX/1638, H8SX/1648, and H8SX/1622 series chips include 8-bit timers, 16- or 32-bit programmable pulse generators, watchdog timers, serial communication interfaces, an I2C bus interface, and clock pulse generators with multiplication phase-locked loops (PLLs). All of the microcontrollers lead-free packages: a 120-pin LQFP (14mm x 14mm) for H8SX/1638 chips, a 144-pin LQFP (20mm x 20mm) for H8SX/1648 group devices, and a 144-pin LQFP or a smaller 145-pin LGA (9mm x 9mm) for H8SX/1622 microcontrollers.
