MUNICH, Germany — In order to enable car-to-infrastructure applications, auto maker BMW has signed a cooperation agreement with the German research center for artificial intelligence (DKFI). The researchers' plan to explore semantic technologies for car-to-infrastructure communications.

In their car-to-x-communications projects, BMW and other automotive vendors as well as the DKFI intend to use internet-based technologies. In addition to research on semantic technologies, the DFKI scientists will create multimode dialog interfaces for driver assistance systems, BMW said in a press release.

These systems will include all the driver's senses and take in consideration the current driving situation in order to minimize stress and maximize driver alertness.

In addition, BMW and DFKI intend to develop intelligent systems designed to support mobility in ageing societies, security technologies for the protection of the vehicle IT infrastructure and agent technologies for different tasks within the driving context. For example, BMW said the researchers would target self-configuring automotive systems that can take autonomous decisions represented by avatars that interact with the driver.

The research cooperation is set to be implemented by BMW subsidiary BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH. It will include bilateral projects as well as projects funded by public institutions, the company said.
